Workplaces Statistics

According to Workforce Safety & Insurance of North Dakota, there were over 100,000 claims filed from 2010 to 2014. The majority of these work-related injuries and incidents were caused by strains, falls and slips. Please use the statistics below to help identify problem areas and improve safety at your workplace.

Nationwide Statistics

• Nearly 3 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses were reported in 2014, occurring at a rate of 3.2 cases per 100 full-time workers.

• Over half of the 3 million private industry injuries and illness cases involved days away from work, job transfer, or restriction.

• 2.8 million cases, or 95.1%, were injuries. With 2.1 million in the service-providing industries and 0.7 million injuries occurred in the goods-producing industries.

• Workplace illnesses accounted for 4.9% and occurred at a rate of 15.3 cases per 10,000 full-time workers.

North Dakota Statistics

• Strains are the most prevalent nature of injury, accounting for approximately 25% of all claims filed in 2014.

• Strains and fractures have accounted for a combined total of 44.1% of claims in 5 years.

• Around 19% of all indemnity claims occurred on Monday, with 55% occurring Monday – Wednesday.

• Injuries to the upper extremities are most prevalent with a 5 year average of 40.2% of all claims.

However, because of our combined efforts to achieve safety excellence, incident rates among our Energy Coalition for Contractor Safety (ECCS) members have stayed relatively low, while man hours have remained high.
