The National Safety Council (NSC) first launched National Safety Month in 1996 to educate and encourage safe behaviors around the leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths in the workplace, on roadways, and in communities.

National Safety Month is a month-long observance to promote safety awareness and injury prevention. Each year, thousands of preventable injuries occur in workplaces due to unsafe practices, lack of training, or simply being unaware of potential hazards. National Safety Month is our opportunity to take a proactive approach by reinforcing safe work habits, training employees on safety procedures, and encouraging open communication about safety concerns.

North Dakota consistently ranks among the most dangerous states for workers, with a high rate of fatal work injuries. In 2023, North Dakota had the highest number of OSHA work-related fatalities (Bureau of Labor Statistics).

In 2025, Governor Armstrong proclaimed June as June Safety Month for the state of North Dakota. A digital copy of the proclamation has been posted to the Governor’s Office website here. Join the North Dakota Safety Council (NDSC) in bringing awareness and helping keep each other safe in any environment.
