Safe Kids North Dakota offers resources to enhance each of your injury prevention programs.

Child Passenger Safety

Did you know that 4 out of 5 car seats are used incorrectly? The mission of Safe Kids Buckle Up is to ensure that all children are appropriately restrained in vehicles. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death to children in the U.S. and in ND. Visit our child passenger safety Web site to learn more about proper restraints and use of restraints for children. Attend one of the many car seat check ups in ND for guidance on the proper installation of your child’s car seat.

Safety In and Around Cars

Safe Kids Buckle Up addresses the three ways children can be injured in non-traffic related incidents in and around cars. While the majority of deaths to children involving motor vehicles are traffic related, approximately ten percent of deaths are reported as non-traffic related. Non-traffic related deaths include children killed in driveways, parking lots and on sidewalks, as well as other off-road locations. They are generally pedestrians but may also be on bikes or other wheeled toys or vehicles. Safe Kids Buckle Up can teach you how to protect your child “In and Around Cars.”

Water Safety

Did you know that a child can drown in as little as one inch of water? Drowning is usually quick and silent. A child will lose consciousness two minutes after submersion, with irreversible brain damage occurring within four to six minutes.

Parents and caregivers need to understand the dangers of drowning and know the proper steps to take to protect children. Safe Kids offers tips in the following areas:

Ø       Home Water Safety

Ø       Pool & Hot Tub Safety

Ø       Beach Safety

Ø       Boating & Swimming Safety

Pedestrian Safety

Safe Kids Worldwide and program sponsor FedEx Express created Safe Kids Walk This Way to teach safe behavior to motorists and child pedestrians and create safer, more walkable communities.  The goal of the initiative is preventing pedestrian-related injury to children.

Each year, a component of the Safe Kids Worldwide Walk This Way program is devoted to funding community groups who focus on issues related to child pedestrian safety. In 2006, Safe Kids Grand Forks was one of ten Safe Kids Worldwide coalitions chosen across the country with the goal of improving pedestrian conditions for children by making long-term environmental improvements.

Wheeled Sports Safety

Bicycles are more than a toy: they are associated with more childhood injuries than any consumer product except the automobile. In the United States in 2001, 134 children ages 14 and under died in bicycle-related crashes and, in 2002, nearly 288,900 were treated in hospital emergency rooms for bicycle-related injuries. Children's risk of injury and death can be greatly reduced by setting some limits. A single rule – wear a helmet – can reduce the risk of head injury by as much as 85 percent.

Safe Kids Ready to Roll is a comprehensive program that includes a step-by-step guide to conducting a community-based wheel safety program. Safe Kids Ready to Roll reduces the incidence and severity of wheel-related injuries by increasing helmet use, promoting safe wheel-riding behavior and creating safer wheel-riding environments. Contact us if you are interested in the Ready to Roll bike rodeo kit which will provide you with the essential tools needed to host interactive events that teach children wheel safety and the rules of the road.

Poison Safety

Each year in the U.S., more than one million children ages 5 and under are accidentally poisoned and 40 percent of these are from prescription drugs and other medications. Safe Kids offers poison prevention materials including brochures, checklists, mirror stickers, posters, safety tips, and a kid’s safety game.

Summer Safety

North Dakota has one of the highest percentages of children’s accidental injury deaths during the summer. Our state has seen an alarming increase in summer time related deaths due to preventable injuries over the past five years. Be a part of the equation to keep children safe during the summer. Make it a Safe Kids Summer and visit our summer safety website for further information.

Fire and Burn Safety

Each year in the United States, nearly 500 children die in residential fires. Eighty-five percent of these children are under age 10, and more than 56 percent are ages 4 and under. Smoke alarms are extremely effective at preventing fire-related death and injury. The chances of dying in a residential fire are cut approximately 50 percent when a smoke alarm is present.

Safe Kids offers fire and burn prevention resources for adults and children, along with links to other safety resources. Visit the Fire and Burn prevention website for teacher resources and presentations, safety games, coloring pages, quizzes, and many other valuable resources.
