Key Issues in North Dakota

Off-the-Job Safety
According to the National Safety Council, unintentional off-the-job worker injuries and deaths to workers cost the nation at least 223.7 billion dollars in 2006, a staggering $817 per U.S. worker.

In North Dakota and all across the nation, our workers are safer at work than they are at home. This is why the North Dakota Safety Council has chosen to attack this issue.

Falls in the Home and Community
According to the 2005 ND Department of Health Injury Prevention Plan, falls are the third leading cause of death in North Dakota.

Data shows that from 1999-2003:
  • Every 4.4 hours someone required an ambulance run due to a fall-related event.
  • Every 1.2 days someone required hospital admission due to a fall related event.
  • Every 5.3 days someone was killed due to a fall-related event.

The number of deaths may be going down, but the number of injuries caused by unintentional poisonings are rising.
